Persepolis takes the frame of the first three volumes of the band drawn and makes us follow the path of Marjane, her childhood in early adulthood. We discovered it with the revolution and war but also all the "stories" of his relatives. This mixture, already present in the comics, associated with a very open tone, gives us a great sense of closeness to the main character: no matter which finally takes place these events, it's all about the history of a young girl seeking her place in a changing world. If the film had been shot in live action, the result would surely have been much stronger if culturally tempted by the side "folklore and tradition." The animation provides an escape from all these through by simplifying the design and bias of the radical black and white: the action seems "timeless" without time cues other than those provided voluntarily by the author. The images of the events and battles evoke by their stylized images much older and yet remain an absolute modernity.
Note also the beautiful animation work : Almost everything was clean and lively "by hand", and the result is so smooth and fair that you almost forget that we are seeing an animated film. Like his work in "paper", the graphics (and animation) to track subtly change the thoughts of the heroine, she imagines the eventful life of her uncle and she falls in love. This mixture of techniques (paper cut, 3D, etc..) Is forgotten as it supports the narrative.
A final word on the choice of voice actors are all excellent, with a special mention for Danielle Darrieux in unconventional grandmother. The players let the characters live, they forget their presence "real" (I also lend an ear to the voice reconnaîre Catherine Deneuve), which is less common in current productions.
Persepolis is not just a great animated film, it's just a great movie. I sincerely hope that the jury at Cannes will not go near the pretext that it's a cartoon ...
